Autumn Revelations (1999)

Reviewers praised Simon-Mary’s most recent CD Stations of the Cross, noting the work’s “utmost concentration”, the “spaces between notes [that] bristle with energy and potential”, and commenting that “Vincent´s fingertips seem to only hover above the keys, brushing over rose petals or pricked by thorns”, with International Piano and Planet Hugill awarding it 5 and 4 stars respectively.

This latest release Autumn Revelations features 2 contrasting works.

Equinox for Ken Aldcroft (solo piano) was composed at the time of the autumnal equinox in 2016, and is made up of small groups of notes whose harmonic content is slowly developed throughout the piece, resulting in layers of colourful and sustained resonance. It is dedicated to Canadian guitarist Ken Aldcroft and his family.

Autumn Revelations (electroacoustic music for 2-channel playback) was composed in 1999, inspired by meeting Karlheinz Stockhausen and attending his composition courses in Kürten in the summer of that year. Fascinated by the concepts of musical timing and pacing discussed during the courses, the work was composed and completed within weeks of Simon-Mary’s return to London.

A simple waveform is the composition’s starting point, which is then transformed by creating subtle, layered harmonies and harmonic shifts which ‘bloom’ as the work progresses. The work was premiered at Conway Hall, London, September 1999.
